Revolver Sights

While many people assume that the sights on their revolver are as good as they can possibly be (save for adding a scope or another kind of external sight), that isn’t always the case. It is true that the sights on modern revolvers are better than they used to be, but they aren’t perfect for everyone in every situation.

There are ways to fix or change sights that don’t work for you. At Speed Beez, we carry a number of options that can help you feel more confident when you are at the range by improving your target acquisition through enhanced visibility. Make sure to check out the section of our store to see the alternatives that are available.

The Revolver Accessories You Need

If you own a revolver, sometimes it can be difficult to find a reliable source for revolver accessories. As semi-automatic pistols continue to increase in popularity and availability, many revolver owners feel like they are being pushed out of their favorite shooting and sporting goods stores.

At Speed Beez, we understand how frustrating that can be. It was for precisely this reason that we started expanding the number and kinds of revolver products that we manufacture, as well as expanding the number of accessories made by other companies. When you need revolver accessories, including holsters, moon clips, grips, or the best speed loaders on the planet — Speed Beez speed loaders — make sure to check our online store first.

Types of Revolver Sights

In order to help educate anyone who might not know about the many different kinds of sights you can find or add to your revolver, we are going to break them down into smaller groups. We hope that you will learn something new about the surprisingly rich history and variety of sights that exist!

Iron Sights

Iron sights are the sights that are built into the revolver by the manufacturer. The iron sights found on almost all revolvers are referred to as open sights because the rear sight has a notch that is open. At the front of the barrel, there is a post. To aim, the shooter aligns the post in the open notch. There are many benefits to open sights, the most important of which is a reduction in visual occlusion.

There are a number of drawbacks to iron sights. First, most iron sights are not adjustable or adjustments are complicated and time-consuming. This can become a big problem if you don’t like the way that your sights look or if you shoot in dark conditions and the front sight is difficult to see in the rear notch.

Second, with iron sights it can take a long time to get your shot properly lined up. While many designers have experimented with variations on these traditional sights in order to speed up target acquisition, the fact remains that they take longer to aim that other kinds of sights.

Both of these drawbacks are compounded if the person shooting the revolver does not have perfect eyesight.

In order to improve iron sights at minimal cost, some manufacturers add bright paint to the back notch or the front sight in order to improve contrast and aid in acquisition. While this can be an improvement, it just isn’t enough for many people.

Fiber Optic Revolver Sights

Fiber optic sights are set up in the same way as iron sights with one key difference: instead of having the post and notch made of a single material, they incorporate small pieces of optic fiber into the sight. This fiber is designed to fixate the light that falls on the fiber at the ends, which creates a much brighter picture that makes aligning the post and notch easier.

Fiber optic sights are available in a number of different configurations, the most common of which is a replacement post. Replacement rear sights can look similar to standard iron sights, or they may have more fiber optic tubing along the inner edges of the notch.

Fiber optic sights are relatively easy to install, especially when compared to scopes and other kinds of aftermarket revolver sights. If your revolver has a drilled and tapped frame, chances are good that there is a set of new fiber optic sights that you can essentially drop right in.

Be sure to check out the fiber optic revolver sight page in our store to look for a set of sights that will make shooting a lot faster and a lot more fun! We stock a number of LPA front and rear revolver sights, as well as sets that contain both the rear notch and front post.

Scopes

Scopes are optical sights that use glass to magnify a target. While they can make it easier to land incredibly precise shots, they are finicky, the slowest of revolver sights, and they take a long time to properly dial-in. If you are hunting dangerous big game, a scope may be the sight you want, but for almost every other kind of shooting, they probably aren’t the best choice.

Revolver Sights for Competitions

Competing with a revolver is one of the most fun and challenging things you can do with a revolver. Whether you are competing solely with your favorite wheelgun or you are taking part in a three-gun, being able to acquire a target quickly is vital. With stock sights on your revolver, you will probably have a very difficult time edging out the people with whom you are competing. Don’t think that there is no hope! With a new set of fiber optic revolver sights, available now from Speed Beez, you can begin to improve your targeting and reload speed!

How to Choose Revolver Sights for Competitions

While most competitions allow you to use iron sights, there are many different rules governing what kind of aftermarket revolver sights you are allowed to shoot with depending on the competition. Below are a list of rules that cover just a few of the main revolver competitions. Be sure to check the rules for any specific comp to ensure that you will be able to compete, as some events, especially smaller regional and local competitions, may have their own rules that diverge from other kinds of shoots.

IDPA (International Defensive Pistol Association) Rules

The IDPA does not allow revolvers to be equipped with laser sights, lights, or any type of sight that is not the traditional notch-and-post style. This means that scopes cannot be used, but that you can use fiber optic sights, like the ones we carry at Speed Beez that are manufactured by LPA.

USPSA (United States Practical Shooting Association)

The USPSA has several different divisions and has different requirements for each. In order to ensure that you are using approved sights, you need to check to see if the competition allows open sights or optical/electronic sights.

  • Open sights are defined as any sight that is attached to the revolver that does not use a lens or any electronic circuitry. Iron sights and upgraded notch-and-post sights are acceptable.
  • Optical/electronic sights are defined as any sights that use electronic circuitry or lenses.

Other Competitions

As we mentioned above, smaller competitions that are run by your local gun club may not follow these rules, so make sure to check in with them before you sign up in order to fit within their guidelines.

Competition Holsters for Revolver With Aftermarket Sights

Changing the sights on your revolver is an excellent way to improve your shooting, but it can make your revolver holster little more than another piece of gear that goes into a drawer never to be seen again, especially if you bought a Kydex revolver holster. It is for this reason that Speed Beez has a selection of competition speed rigs!

Benefits of Competition Revolver Holsters

Speed rigs are specially designed holsters that allow you to draw much more quickly than traditional holsters because you draw forward instead of up. The open-front holsters can accommodate revolvers with aftermarket sights that are larger (or shaped differently) than the iron sights your revolver was built with.

These holsters feature specialized hardware that allows you to make cant adjustments, width adjustments, and choose which side of your body to attach it to. . While you might assume that these holsters would be less safe, they are manufactured to be incredibly secure. Safety on the range is paramount, especially when you are with other people.

Many competitions have special rules governing holster choices, so check on those rules before you make a purchase. Many of the holsters we carry are rated to comply with several ISPC and USPSA competition requirements. Browse our holster selection today for a speed rig designed for your revolver!

Other Revolver Accessories

When you need revolver accessories, you can count on Speed Beez. We make the world’s greatest speed loaders and many other kinds of revolver gear, while also stocking well-built gear from other trusted names in the business.

Revolver Grips

When you replace your sights, it is also a good time to think about a different set of revolver grips. Grips can have a huge impact on your aim and your comfort level, especially during competitions when you are putting a lot of rounds down range. You may be surprised at how much of a difference new grips can make. Speed Beez carries a number of grips that are made from a variety of different materials that fit on a range of revolvers.

Speed Loaders and Moon Clips

If you see revolver competition in your future or you want to spend more time at the range dialing in your new sights, a speed loader or moon clips can make the experience a lot more fun and a lot faster! Our loaders are manufactured in the United States from high-quality materials that are rated to stand up to years of heavy use.

We manufacture moon clips, too! If you use rimless ammunition in your revolver, you need moon clips to hold the rounds in place in the cylinder. Our clips are made to be as thin as possible to prevent any problems with opening or closing the cylinder. We also include a de-mooning tool to help remove that first piece of brass.
