4 Reasons To Keep Alcohol and Guns Apart

guns-apart

The title of this article might at first seem confusing. After all, it was just last week that we were telling you how to have fun with your guns on the 4th of July. But the 4th is one of the most common day of the year for people to drink (only New Year’s Eve and St. Patrick’s Day beat it). Even the founding fathers had a massive party not long before signing the Constitution, so it’s pretty obvious that drinking has always been a part of this national holiday.

So now we’re telling you that it might be better to leave the guns locked up if you’re going to drink a few on Independence Day? Without mincing words, yes: it’s probably best if you leave the guns at home when you head off to a 4th of July party. As much as we love guns, speed loaders, and moon clips, they don’t mix with alcohol. Some of the reasons aren’t as obvious as others, so keep reading to discover why you should pick one or the other.

Don’t Set It Down and Forget About It

We’re going to start off with a big one that most people don’t ever even think about. If you bring out a gun at a party and start shooting at a target (with the property owner’s permission, of course), that’s fine. But as you drink throughout the day, you’re more likely to take a few shots at a target and then set the gun down absentmindedly on the porch railing or picnic table. And if a child comes along and grabs it, that could be big trouble. Not bringing it along in the first place will keep kids safer if you’ll be drinking.

Avoid Altercations

There’s a reason that the term “bar fight” exists. When people get drunk, they’re more likely to take something said the wrong way, and they’re more likely to act on it. While you can still get arrested for getting into fist fights at a party, it’s much better than getting arrested for murder because you brought a gun. If you like to drink on the 4th, leave the gun somewhere safe.

Don’t Shoot Into the Air

In our previous blog we told you all about why it’s not a good idea to shoot your guns up in the air. Your sober mind might know it’s a bad idea, but alcohol can overcome the logic. People who are drinking are more likely to make that bad decision to do so, so take away the opportunity to join in on the “fireworks” by not bringing your revolver along in the first place.

You Might Not Know What You’re Shooting At

As the day goes on and it gets darker, there’s a good chance that you’ll be most buzzed at the end of the day. The lack of light, mixed with mixed drinks, just means that you’re less likely to know what you’re shooting at. What you think is a raccoon might be a person, so why take the chance?

You Might Ignore Basic Safety

A person who’s drinking is more likely to forget basic gun safety. They might accidentally point the gun at a crowd instead of at the ground when they turn around, or think a gun is unloaded when in fact they just loaded it. Don’t throw away years of safe gun use because there’s a gun in one hand and a beer in the other.

As we’ve said before, we want you shooting for a lifetime, and we certainly don’t want to lose a speedloader customer because they made a bad decision on our country’s birthday. Not only do we want you and others to be safe with guns, but we also want you to be safe on the road; make sure you have a designated driver. Have a safe Independence Day!
