So you’ve got your gun, which means you’re ready for the firing range, right? Well, hold on there a second. You’re also going to need:
Hearing Protection: When you’re shooting, it gets loud. Not just from you, but from everyone else around you.
The problem is, you might hear some ringing (tinnitus) when you’re at the range, and then, after it goes away, you might think you’re fine. Unfortunately, hearing loss can be cumulative, so the next time you go to the range you’re hearing is just going to get worse, the ringing will become more frequent, and eventually you might not be able to sleep at night because of the ringing in your ears.
Eye Protection: You might think ear protection is the only protection you’ll need, and you’d be very wrong. While the powder residue probably won’t cause irreparable harm, a ruptured cartridge can. And considering your holding the gun at eye level when you shoot it, it’s pretty obvious that some stylish eye protection is important. (Also, be sure to wear eye protection when you’re cleaning your gun to prevent parts under tension, such as springs, from jumping into your eye.)
Speedloaders: You might not initially think of speedloaders as a piece of safety equipment. But consider this…with a speedloader you’re less likely to drop cartridges. Which means you’re less likely to bend over, dropping the cartridges you’ve already loaded onto the range. Then when you stand back up you’re less likely knock over your box of brass. A speedloader can prevent all this!
So there you have it. Three pieces of range safety gear that you need. Buy that third piece of gear, your next speedloader, right here.
