Why It’s Important To Have Proper Ear Protection No Matter Where You’re Shooting

We’ve said it before and we’ll said it again…you might leave your speedloader at home and still be able to shoot. You might leave your block or your revolver speed holster or your favorite targets at home, and you’ll still be able to shoot. But don’t shoot if you don’t have the right ear protection!

Why is it so important to wear proper ear protection no matter where you’re shooting?

At An Indoor Range: The most obvious place to wear ear protection is at an indoor range. One shot and the reverberation from the walls will tell your ears that it’s going to be impossible to stay in there without suffering some form of permanent hearing loss. Add to that lots of other people shooting and you’re going to lose your hearing pretty quickly.

At An Outdoor Range: If you’re not at an indoor range, you might first think that your ears are safe because there’s nothing for the sound to bounce off of. But you’re still subjected to the sound of 150+ decibels of ear-splitting explosions, just feet from your head. Plus you’ve got other people around you on the range who are shooting, and the damage just builds and builds.

When You’re Alone: This can be the most deceptive of them all. If you’re out walking around your property or at a campground’s shooting range, it might not seem so bad to fire off a few rounds without hearing protection. But just because your ears can withstand some percussive shots doesn’t mean that they should be subjected to them. Though you might not be made uncomfortable from the shots now, it’s likely to hurt your hearing as you age.

Always remember, the damage you do to you ears is cumulative, so you should never “give up” on your ears and do away with protection. Even if you’re having trouble hearing now, it will just get worse if you leave the earplugs and earmuffs at home.

Here at Speed Beez we want you shooting for a lifetime, so make sure to protect your ears all the time.
